Why does a book needs a Copyright, ISBN and a LCCN
Copyright has nothing to do with the ISBN or with the LCCN. The Copyright is what the author does to show they wrote the book. ---
Publishers does not own the Authors' copyright of the book.
The Author signs a publishing contract with a publisher, giving the publisher the right to the following:
1) Publish the book in Print and in E-book formats
2) The publisher then has the right to print and setup the book / ebook for distribution and sales
3) Then the publisher then gives the author a percentage of the sales - Called Royalty - Based on what the publisher receives from sales after wholesale and printing cost.
ISBN is what publishers assigns to the book they are publishing. - When a author signs with a publisher or with a printer that does what is called Publishing Platform-. The author is giving the publish the right to publish - print and set the book up for distribution and sales with the publisher's partners and wholesalers / distributors and their printing manufactures. As the book is ordered by booksellers from the publisher only. Not from the author. Yeah authors can become a publisher when they buy their own ISBN. Ths make the author a publisher. And then your publishing company then takes a part of your book sales. How else is your publishing company will stay in business. Just like any other publishers they will take a part of the sales. That is how they are able to print your books up and do Advertising and Marketing and pay their employees.
ISBN has to be assigned to each format paperback - hardback and in every size a book is printed in, and that also goes for ebooks. ISBN helps the book resell industry to know which format and size they are ordering and the price of that format.
ISBN for Ebooks also help to tie the print and the ebook together. And ISBN should be assigned to a ebook. And you cannot use the same ISBN from a print book on a ebook.
A different ISBN also should be assigned to every ebook format.
Why?
Amazon Kindle ebook is Mobi version and should have its own ISBN.
BN Nook Ebook is EPub and Ebook version this should have its own ISBN different than Kindle.
If you do not do a separate ISBN for each ebook version through all Ebook seller setup... Then when a person walks into BN store and buys your ebook. And if it does not have a separate ISBN then BN ends up buying the wrong Ebook for the customer as they might buy the ebook from Kindle and.... Then when you look at your sales on Kindle you see a 35% instead of your 70%. That is why.
This is why ISBN was created to keep track of the different Print and Ebook formats. So that way the correct Ebook can be ordered, so you get paid what you should be paid.
Yes Amazon and other ebook and print books uses ASIN to number your book on their site. But you still need ISBN assigned to each format if your going to sell your book in the book industry market. To BN Nook / Kindle / Smashwords. They all need their own ISBN for every FORMAT.
There is also the LCCN - (Library Congress Catalog Number) and this has nothing to do with the Copyright either or with the ISBN. As the publisher has to register the book with the Library of Congress to get the LCCN. As books has to be registered before the book is published to receive the LCCN. This helps the libraries if they want to order your book. No LCCN no Library sales. As Libraries also have to order books for their shelves. And the Book also have to have ISBN and a Bar Code as well.
